Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the November 3 midterm election, delivering one of the most significant political upsets of the 2026 election cycle. His victory ends nearly four decades without a Democratic U.S. Senate election win in Texas, a state long dominated by Republicans.

The 37-year-old state representative and former middle school teacher will become the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas since Lloyd Bentsen won reelection in 1988. His victory also ends a 32-year losing streak for Democratic candidates seeking statewide office in Texas, where Republicans have maintained a powerful political advantage since the 1990s.

Talarico’s campaign focused heavily on the cost of living, public education, government corruption and the influence of wealthy donors in politics. His message sought support beyond traditional Democratic voters, including independents and Republicans dissatisfied with the direction of state and national politics. The victory came just two years after President Donald Trump carried Texas by approximately 14 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.

Paxton entered the general election after defeating longtime Republican Senator John Cornyn in a contentious primary runoff. Although he received Trump’s endorsement, Paxton faced continued scrutiny over past legal controversies and his 2023 impeachment by the Texas House, which ended in acquittal by the state Senate. The race attracted extraordinary spending, with Republicans investing more than $316 million in efforts to retain the seat, according to Reuters.

The Senate contest was part of a broader Democratic breakthrough across Texas. Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott, while Democratic candidates also captured other statewide offices. The results marked a dramatic change in a state where Republicans had previously held every statewide elected office for more than three decades.

Talarico is expected to take office in January 2027 as Democrats assume control of the U.S. Senate. His victory gives the party representation from a state that has been central to Republican national politics and signals a potentially important shift in Texas’s political landscape ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
