Gasoline prices remain sharply higher than a year ago as Americans prepare for the November 3 midterm elections, putting renewed attention on household expenses and President Donald Trump’s efforts to lower fuel costs. The national average for regular gasoline stood at $4.27 per gallon Thursday, approximately $1.20 higher than at the same time last year.

Although gasoline prices have declined in recent weeks, the relief has been limited. AAA reports that the national average fell six cents over the past week, helped by the transition to less expensive winter-blend fuel. Elevated crude oil prices continue to restrict further reductions, leaving October on track to become the most expensive October on record for gasoline.

The Trump administration has announced several measures intended to ease fuel costs, particularly for farmers and commercial transportation operators. Those efforts include expanded access to lower-tax diesel fuel for certain uses, temporary changes involving Russian diesel imports and financial assistance for farmers. Energy analysts have questioned how quickly the measures could produce noticeable savings for consumers.

High fuel prices are also becoming a prominent economic issue in the midterm campaign. Polling and voter interviews indicate widespread frustration with transportation costs alongside grocery bills and other household expenses. Republicans are defending the administration’s economic policies, while Democrats are highlighting affordability concerns. The extent to which gasoline prices will influence individual races remains uncertain.

The pressure extends beyond drivers filling their tanks. Diesel fuel, used extensively in trucking, agriculture and distribution, averaged approximately $6.28 per gallon in the latest federal weekly report, substantially above last year’s level. With energy markets facing continuing supply disruptions and the election approaching, the cost of fuel remains an immediate concern for households and businesses alike.
