An armed security guard fatally shot a gunman who opened fire at a Citibank office complex near Tampa, Florida, on November 4, killing a female employee and sending thousands of workers into emergency lockdowns and evacuations. Authorities credited the guard’s intervention with bringing the attack to an end before additional lives were lost.
The violence unfolded shortly after noon at Citibank’s Sabal Center campus in Hillsborough County, where more than 3,200 people were working. Investigators said the attacker drove a sedan through a security fence and into an outdoor dining area before emerging with a rifle and shooting a woman. The employee was pronounced dead at the scene.
The gunman then entered a building cafeteria, where an armed Citibank security guard confronted him. Gunfire was exchanged, and the suspect was critically wounded. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m. Four other people were hospitalized with injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening, although investigators had not established whether those injuries resulted from gunfire or the vehicle crash.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office began receiving emergency calls at approximately 12:11 p.m., and the first marked patrol unit arrived within a minute. A massive response followed, involving 367 sheriff’s deputies and additional local, state and federal personnel. Officers searched offices and surrounding buildings as employees sheltered in secured rooms or fled the complex. Nearby businesses also provided refuge, including a hotel that reportedly accommodated hundreds of workers.
Citigroup Chief Executive Jane Fraser confirmed the death of a colleague in a message to employees, expressing grief over the attack. Authorities had not publicly identified the victim or the gunman in their initial reports, and investigators were still working to determine the motive and whether the two knew each other. The Sheriff’s Office is continuing its homicide investigation and has requested video footage from anyone who witnessed the incident.
