The U.S. Postal Service is working around the clock to deliver millions of mail-in ballots ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, deploying additional workers, extended hours, and special delivery procedures as voting deadlines approach. The nationwide effort comes as election officials prepare to count ballots in races that will determine control of Congress and numerous state offices.

The agency began implementing what it calls extraordinary measures on October 24, including additional mail collections, expedited ballot processing, special pickups, and direct transportation to local election offices when necessary. Some postal locations are also offering dedicated ballot services, while employees conduct repeated checks of processing facilities to locate any remaining election mail.

Over the past two months, USPS has handled tens of millions of ballots alongside a record 4.2 billion pieces of political advertising mail, according to Reuters. Postal workers are conducting additional collections and deliveries in the final days before voting, with some facilities bringing in extra staff to ensure ballots are processed and transported as quickly as possible.

The effort follows months of debate over mail-in voting procedures and proposed federal restrictions. President Donald Trump’s administration sought additional requirements involving state voter lists, but federal courts blocked implementation of the restrictions ahead of the election. Postal officials have maintained that the agency’s responsibility is to process and deliver election mail securely and without political preference.

For voters who have not yet returned their ballots, deadlines vary significantly by state. Some jurisdictions accept ballots postmarked by Election Day, while others require ballots to arrive at election offices by a specific deadline. With Election Day just one day away, voters should check their state election office’s instructions and consider an authorized ballot drop box or in-person return option rather than relying on last-minute mail delivery.
