OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities in Google Chrome, allowing the AI assistant to access information across open browser tabs and carry out tasks on websites. The update moves ChatGPT beyond answering questions toward helping users complete everyday activities directly in their browsers.
The upgraded ChatGPT browser extension allows users to reference open tabs while chatting with the assistant. Someone comparing products across several shopping websites, for example, can ask ChatGPT to examine specifications, prices and other details without manually copying information from each page.
The update also brings more advanced browser controls through ChatGPT Work. With appropriate permissions, the assistant can navigate websites, fill out forms, organize tabs, download files and help complete multistep tasks. These capabilities could be particularly useful for people managing research, online purchases, administrative work and other activities involving multiple websites.
Users can also open ChatGPT alongside the page they are viewing through a browser side panel, allowing conversations to continue without switching between separate windows. OpenAI says the extension can work with websites where users are already signed in, although access permissions and available features depend on the user’s settings, account and application.
The expanded browser integration comes as technology companies compete to make AI assistants more useful beyond traditional chat interfaces. By combining information from multiple tabs with the ability to take action, ChatGPT is moving closer to becoming a practical assistant for everyday online work. Users should still review permissions and sensitive actions carefully before allowing an AI system to interact with personal accounts or information.
