Millions of Amazon Prime customers are set to receive automatic refunds beginning October 1 under an expanded $2.5 billion federal settlement over the company’s Prime subscription practices.
The refunds trace back to a 2025 settlement between Amazon and the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC accused Amazon of enrolling millions of customers in Prime without their consent and making it unnecessarily difficult for people to cancel their subscriptions. Amazon agreed to pay a $1 billion civil penalty and provide up to $1.5 billion in refunds to affected customers.
Earlier refunds were generally capped at $51, but a federal court has now approved changes that expand the program. Eligible U.S. Prime customers who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits during a qualifying 12-month period can now receive automatic payments. Those customers were not included in earlier rounds. No claim form or other paperwork is required, and payments will be sent through PayPal, Venmo or mailed checks.
The revised order also raises the maximum total refund to $200. If the amount of accepted payments from the settlement fund remains below a required level, customers who previously accepted refunds may receive another payment of up to $149, bringing their total to as much as $200. Those supplemental payments would begin by April 2027. Amazon has already distributed more than $845 million in refunds under the settlement.
Consumers should also watch for scams. The FTC says it is not contacting people about the Amazon refunds, and neither the FTC nor Amazon will ask consumers to pay money to receive one. Eligible customers do not need to pay anyone, submit a new claim or complete additional forms to receive the upcoming automatic payments.
