Some employers that cut jobs because of artificial intelligence are hiring for those roles again, finding that the technology still needs human judgment and oversight. An October 29 Associated Press report examines these reversals, though their frequency remains unclear.

Hiring managers across finance, marketing, law and healthcare reported restoring the same or similar positions after AI-related cuts, according to staffing firm Robert Half. Reasons included greater-than-expected oversight needs and the loss of knowledge experienced employees brought to their work.

Klarna resumed recruiting human customer service representatives in 2025 after its push toward chatbot support went too far, its chief executive acknowledged. These examples illustrate the difficulty of replacing an entire role simply because software can handle some tasks.

For workers invited back, the offer can bring opportunity alongside understandable doubts. Experts interviewed by AP suggested discussing compensation, training, advancement and how future AI plans could affect the position before agreeing to return.

The broader lesson is that adopting AI requires a realistic understanding of the work people perform. Companies reconsidering cuts must also rebuild trust with employees whose expertise they need again.
