The National Institutes of Health says cognitive health — the ability to think, learn and remember clearly — is influenced by a combination of genetics, environment and lifestyle. While people cannot change their genes, researchers say several everyday habits may help support brain health as they grow older.

Physical activity is one of them. Federal guidelines recommend that adults get at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, and even walking can be a good place to start. Managing high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol is also important because conditions that damage blood vessels can affect the brain as well as the heart.

Sleep and social connection matter, too. Sleep helps the brain form and store memories, while poor sleep can contribute to problems with memory and concentration. Staying connected with friends, family and the community has also been associated with better cognitive health, while social isolation and loneliness have been linked to cognitive decline and a higher risk of dementia.

Keeping the mind active may help as well. Learning new skills, reading, volunteering, teaching and participating in meaningful activities can keep the brain engaged. But consumers should be cautious about supplements, pills and commercial products that promise to prevent dementia or dramatically improve memory. The National Institute on Aging says there is currently no proven drug or lifestyle approach that prevents Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias.

Some changes in memory are a normal part of getting older, but brain health isn’t completely beyond our influence. Staying physically active, managing chronic health conditions, sleeping well, maintaining relationships and continuing to learn are practical ways to support cognitive health throughout life.
